The IGK-PAK project was launched with an inception workshop in Peshawar and Lahore, setting the stage for a major climate adaptation initiative to strengthen the resilience of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. The project focuses on assessing climate risks in key sectors such as agriculture, water, and infrastructure, particularly those vulnerable to floods and droughts. Using the Economics of Climate Adaptation (ECA) framework and the CLIMADA modeling tool, the project seeks to help decision-makers identify cost-effective adaptation measures for targeted investments into climate resilience. These recommendations will be articulated in newly developed sector-specific climate risk guidelines.
A diverse group of stakeholders participated in the workshops, with government departments playing a crucial role in shaping the project. A significant objective of the workshops was the project’s alignment with existing government policies and ongoing initiatives to ensure a successful implementation and sustainability beyond the project’s duration.
One of the project’s key innovations is its focus on capacity building. Through a dedicated training-of-trainers program on CLIMADA, seminars on Climate Risk Management (CRM), and Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance (CDRFI), the project aims to transfer knowledge and equip government departments, local authorities, and other stakeholders with the tools they need to sustain its outcomes beyond the project’s duration. This approach will empower government departments and communities to continuously assess climate risks and take appropriate action.
